The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office is going to allow the public to get “revenge” on law enforcement officers from around the area in their Dunk-A-Cop fundraiser at the Roman Roast on the River on Friday and Saturday.

Sheriff Tim Burkhalter said the contest is being set up to help support the Floyd County Special Olympics program and Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp for special needs children. Burkhalter is scheduled to be first up when the balls start flying Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Ridge Ferry Park.

The Dunk-a-Cop fundraiser will continue Friday until 7 p.m. and then start back up at 10 a.m. on Saturday and continue until 5 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office is charging $2 a ball, $5 for 3 balls or $10 to just hit the button to dunk an officer during the two-day fundraiser.

“This is a good time to get some payback and to support a good cause at the same time,” Burkhalter said.

Agencies from all over Floyd County are participating, and notable individuals who will be on the dunk tank platform include District Attorney Leigh Patterson, Floyd County Police Chief Bill Shiflett, Rome Police Chief Hubert Smith and Floyd County Emergency Management Association director Scotty Hancock.

Smith said his entire traffic division will also be participating in the event, and the Georgia State Patrol is committed to having troopers out as well on Saturday afternoon. “We want some real men out there to throw the balls,” Smith said. “Not some wimps, because we’ll have real men up there waiting to get dunked.”
