Emergency management officials said a large tree that threatened to fall on a power line on Maple Avenue was taken down while the road was temporarily blocked on Sunday afternoon.

According to Tim Herrington of the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency:

A tree approximately 50 feet tall was starting to uproot at East Eighth Street and Maple Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Georgia Power Co. crews were called in to cut down the tree, since it was not on a city right of way but was threatening the power lines underneath it.

Herrington said police and EMA crews blocked the road while the tree was removed. The road was reopened by 4 p.m.

No power outages were reported.
