The Rome News-Tribune garnered 12 awards in the Georgia Press Association’s 2007 Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were presented Friday night in Savannah during the GPA’s annual convention.

Staff awards included:

  • Third place, Local News Coverage

  • First place, Lifestyle Coverage

  • Third place, Editorial Page

  • Third place, Special Issues, for Past Times

    Individual award winners were:

  • Jack Runninger, second place, Humorous Column

  • Jim O’Hara, third place, Sports Column

  • Ryan Smith, third place, Sports Feature Photo

  • William Martin, third place, Spot News Photo

  • Mike Lester, third place, Editorial Cartoonist

  • Chris Marr, third place, Hard News Writing

  • Chris Marr, third place, Business Coverage

  • Sonya Elkins, third place, Education Coverage

    “It’s always nice to see the hard work of the hometown newspaper honored, especially in key categories that show our dedication to covering the news of our community,” said Charlotte Atkins, Rome News-Tribune editor. “I’m so proud that we had several awards that recognized the efforts and talent of the staff as a team, and I congratulate the individual award winners. Still, our greatest reward is serving our readers.”

    News Publishing Co., the parent company of the Rome News-Tribune, also owns six weekly newspapers in Northwest Georgia and East Alabama. Those other publications won 27 awards at Friday night’s banquet.

    Burgett H. Mooney III, publisher of the Rome News-Tribune and president of News Publishing Co., finished his term Saturday as president of the Georgia Press Association.

    The Rome News-Tribune and the Calhoun Times also received advertising awards from the Georgia Press Association earlier this year.

    The Rome News-Tribune earned four awards:

  • First Place: Henderson & Sons Funeral Home — Service/Institutional category

  • First Place: Heritage Pontiac-Buick-GMC-Honda — Motor Vehicle/Color category

  • First Place: Nelson’s Appliance & Home Furnishings — Home Furnishings and Appliance category

  • Second Place: Greene’s Jewelers — Apparel, Jewelry and Accessories category

    The Calhoun Times won two awards in its circulation division:

  • First Place: Rome Braves — Full-color category

  • First Place: Rome Braves — Ad Idea of the Year Weekly.
