Rome may have set a new high temperature mark, but most of the weather talk Saturday was about a severe weather alert the community was placed under for today.

The National Weather Service reported that the mercury reached 85 degrees in Rome on Saturday, one degree higher than the previous 84-degree high set in 1944.

But of more concern was the fact that Floyd and its neighboring counties — along with much of North Georgia — have been placed under a severe weather alert.

The Weather Service has predicted severe thunderstorms for today, with large hail and damaging winds likely. A few tornadoes are possible.

Today’s forecasted high is 70, with the chance of rain 80 percent. Partly cloudy skies, showers and thunderstorms are likely in the evening. Lows will be in the low 50s. The chance of rain is 60 percent
