Throughout spring training, Rome Braves manager

Rocket Wheeler will provide a daily report the team’s camp in Kissimmee, Fla.

SATURDAY’S REPORT

Overview: Today we played an intersquad game using “controlled” innings (a limit of 15 pitches per inning). We are trying to build up the pitchers’ arms and make sure they don’t get overextended.

We also got a chance to try some things that we’d been working on recently. We put the kids in some different situations to see how they’d react, and they reacted well.

We won 12-9 in 12 innings, but I had to leave after the 10th to go coach first base for the Atlanta Braves since they had to split the squads. It was a lot of fun.

Highlights: (Potential Rome Brave) Steve Doetsch hit a three-run homer and Scott Schade (also a Rome prospect) had three hits during the intrasquad game.

Gregor Blanco (who will likely be in Greenville) had a grand slam.

Pitcher Jo Jo Reyes (a possible member of the Rome rotation) pitched well, as did Steve Russell.

Concerns: (Right now) the pitching is a little bit behind. But that’s to be expected. It’s only the second or third time out for these guys

Today: The minor leaguers will have another intersquad scrimmage this morning.

On Monday, the minor leaguers will be divided into groups for the first time and will begin regular workouts.

Looking Ahead: The Braves will receive their 2003 South Atlantic League championship rings on Saturday morning at 8:30.

The Braves open the season April 8, hosting the Augusta GreenJackets on April 8
