NASHVILLE, Tenn. — HCA Inc. reported that fourth-quarter results swung to a profit, but the performance fell short of expectations. In quarter ending Dec. 31, net income totaled $317 million, or 63 cents a share, compared with a net loss of 20 cents a share a year earlier. But settlement of fraud charges and gains on sales of facilities lowered the earnings per share to 58 cents.
