Northwest Georgia could be in for some isolated but powerful thunderstorms later today, the National Weather Service reports.

The culprits: The tropical air system now over the state will soon collide with a cold front that some reports say could drop morning lows to below freezing by the weekend.

"Some of these thunderstorms may become severe," the weather service advisory reads.
