In the second game of the Southern States Athletic Conference softball tournament, the No. 3-seeded Shorter College Lady Hawks advanced to the winner’s bracket with a 5-3 win over the No. 6-seeded Faulkner University Lady Eagles. Shorter improves to 39-14 while Faulkner slips to 24-26.
The Lady Hawks got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning. Dandi Ammons hit a two-run single to shallow center field to scored Amanda Albertson and Tiffany Adams for a lead that Shorter wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the game.
In the bottom of the second inning, Shorter put three more runs on the board. Tiffany Adams doubled to deep left field to score Emily Clements and Charlsie Broome, and a wild pitch from Faulkner’s Emily Jimmerson scored Adams to put the Lady Hawks up 5-0.
Faulkner put three runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning, thanks in part to a two-run home run from Jessica Tumlinson, but it wouldn’t be enough to topple Shorter.
Albertson led Shorter going 3-for-4 with a run, as the Lady Hawks had 15 hits to Faulkner’s five.
Libby Munson (18-4) was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings for five hits, three earned runs, and one walk, while striking out eight. Jimmerson (16-12) got the loss for Faulkner.
Shorter plays again on Friday at 12 p.m. against Lee University in the semi-finals of the winner’s bracket.
