Safe Kids of Floyd in conjunction with the Georgia State Patrol and Toys R Us will host a car seat safety check this Thursday at Toys R Us on Martha Berry Highway.

The check begins at 11 a.m.

Georgia law requires that children younger than 8 be properly secured in an approved car seat or booster seat while riding in passenger automobiles, vans and pickup trucks.

“We will be there until everyone who shows up gets checked,” said Andrew Denmon, coordinator for Safe Kids.

Last year, Safe Kids gave out 128 car seats that were donated and conducted four car seat safety checks.

The organization also takes donations of car seats and gives them to needy families.

A program with the Supervision Services allows people on probation to donate car seats to Safe Kids instead of performing community service.

That program has brought in about 75 donated car seats since November, Denmon said.

Denmon said he hopes to create a coalition in Polk, Chattooga and Floyd counties that will be called the Coosa Valley Child Passenger Safety Task Force.
