While the rest of the world was waiting on the Oscars, scores of Rome area birders turned out in droves Sunday to get a glimpse of the national symbol that has made a home in Rome.

Tripods, binoculars, bag chairs and long lenses were the order of the day behind The Cage Center at Berry as Romans gathered to try to get a glimpse of the newest members of the Berry eagle family.

The eagles have at least two chicks in their nest.

Jim Ozier, director of the non-game division of the Georgia DNR said he was excited with the interest in the eagles and hopes they will produce young from the Berry nest for many years.

I think it's fabulous that so many people are interested in these majestic eagles. I never thought I would see an eagle in my lifetime, much less a nesting pair! Bald Eagles mate for life and use the same nest year after year. I just hope the construction of Berry's stadium does not bother or hinder them from doing what comes naturally. Isn't it possible to find another location on that giant campus of theirs? Surely Berry makes enough money to redraw the plans for another optimal stadium location.

3rdRock: I wondered the same thing. Don't bother the eagles! Relocate the building a few feet. What would Martha do?

It is my understanding that they have already made adjustments to their construction plans including the time they will be doing the construction. They are working closely with DNR to be sure the eagles and eaglets are not disturbed. The birds chose this busy location and it doesn't seem to bother them.
