House Speaker David Ralston made the appointment Thursday.
The committee is composed of three members of the House and three senators, and Sen. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, is the other co-chairman. Its job is to review the operations and finances of the Georgia Technology Authority that handles telecommunications and computers for state government.
The appointment is a boost for Harbin who hasn't had a leadership position since being stripped of the chairmanship of the powerful House Appropriations Committee two years ago.
“I would like to thank the speaker for having the confidence in me to lead this important oversight committee that helps ensure the continued growth of Georgia’s technology industry,” Harbin said.
Earlier in the week, Harbin chaired the Telecommunications Subcommittee of the House Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications Committee. He had to preside over a hearing on a controversial bill sponsored by the full committee's chairman.
