Darlington School trustees will undergo a national search to find a successor for Headmaster Tom Whitworth, who has announced his plans to retire in June 2014.

Since his tenure began in 2005, Whitworth said he has been most inspired by the people in this tight-knit community who make Darlington the special place that it is.

“Margo and I have been very fortunate to encounter the beauty and good people of Rome,” Whitworth said. “However, working with the faculty, staff and students at Darlington has been our highlight. We have loved our time and our work here, and we will always be invested in Darlington’s future and well-being.

“While Margo and I are really looking forward to this new chapter in life and to spending more time with our children and grandchildren, we cannot lose sight of the present,” he continued. “There is much to do over the next 18 months and I plan to work as hard as ever. We have so very much that is positive and defining to accomplish together, to ensure the very best for our students and families in Darlington’s second century and beyond.”

Whitworth began his tenure as headmaster during the school’s Centennial Celebration. Since then, he has led Darlington through the completion of a $90 million Second Century Campaign, which included the addition of Thatcher Hall, a LEED-certified Middle School facility.

“His steadfast dedication to building endowment for faculty support and student financial aid has inspired us to keep on working hard to raise funds over and above our goal,” said Jere Drummond (’57), chairman of the Board of Trustees. “He has also worked with the Business Office to maintain a balanced budget despite the national economic downturn and the increased need for financial aid among current and prospective families.”

With over 30 years of administrative experience, Whitworth has been the driving force behind many initiatives that have strengthened Darlington’s student-centered programming over the past eight years. He was integral in the establishment of the Teaching and Learning Center, which meets the needs of all types of learners in grades PK-12. He led Darlington through the transition to a unified PK-8 program, which strengthened curriculum continuity and allows students to progress with fewer transitions. Under his leadership, Darlington has also integrated 21st Century skills in all facets of its curriculum through initiatives such as the 1:1 program in grades 4-9 and a focus on project-based learning in all grade levels.

"Tom has been purposeful in his effort to create a ‘one-school’ atmosphere between what, for years, has felt like three different campuses,” Drummond said. “But most importantly, he has always shown an unwavering commitment to the mission of Darlington School.”

A Search Committee, chaired by trustee Linda (Grizzard) Owens (’79), has already been formed to lead the national search for Whitworth’s successor. Ad-hoc committees comprised of faculty, staff, parents and students will also be involved in the search process.

“We hope to identify a new headmaster by fall 2013 in order to ensure a seamless and effective transition,” Drummond said. “I want to take this opportunity to thank Tom for his dedication to Darlington. It has been such a pleasure to work with him in so many aspects of life at Darlington, and I know he has always had the school’s best interests at heart. I look forward to continuing our work over the next year and a half.”

Chief Keef are you a parent or just an outsider looking in? Just because the football team and basketball teams are doing well doesn't mean that TW had Anything to do with their successes! Look at the high school football coaches, look how many are employees of Darlington. Only 3 guys including their head coach that stand on the sidelines on Friday night are employed by Darlington School. TW has failed to hire competent coaches and this is hurting the athletic programs. They have lost several good coaches because of administration and the lack of support and respect they deserve. Why don't you call someone that has been there for a while and get your facts straight before giving credit where credit isn't due? Also, does anyone know the athletic director at Darlington? I go to about every sporting event at Darlington because I love competitive sports and Darlington but I wouldn't be able to pick this man out of a line up. When I have asked several individuals who he was they don't seem to know and if they know what he looks like they say he never comes to anything! So please don't give him any of the fame or the glory to these programs thriving. 100% of all credit goes to the coaches of these 2 teams. This so called athletic director was hired over a Dar alumni and employee at the time who loved Darlington and wanted the best for all Darlington Athletics. What a shame for the students and on the ones who were on the hiring committee, they obviously were not competent enough in athletics to have chosen this guy as Jerry Sharp's replacement. Jerry Sharp and Jim Mccallie are seen on a regular home basis at games. They come because of their love for Darlington and for athletics. Also, the only thing that would make TW's leaving even better, would be for him to take all the clowns that have been hired under his control with him straight out the door!! These so called heads of house positions have destroyed school spirit they do not support athletics. Iwas at the recent GL game and they were having a dorm competition in wrestling room during the game and I was told that the students weren't allowed to leave and go to the game by their dorm parents! I was literally floored and don't understand why the parents allowed this to happen. One word of advice is to send these employees that have been hired from the north and by TW back up north until they learn southern tradition or when to keep their mouths shut and repect our rich southern tradition.Which includes football and spirit trips to the games instead of trips to all over Rome, I learned this from someone I spoke to at the school as well. So as I mentioned in the beginning of my post, Chief Keef pick up your phone and call some of the people still there after all these years and find out how happy they are but don't wait too long because there are only a few good ones left and if I was a betting person I would bet that they only have one or two years left!!

I am the parent of a Darlington student. I am not of the "good ole boy system". You know, that system that holds everyone tight and nothing is gonna change because "my childs grandparents attended Darlington". Therefore, I was delighted when Tom came to Darlington. I have known JVE also and I can say that the right choice was made. Not because I don't like him, I like him very much. But, because it was time. I am pleased with the direction Darlington has taken. Nothing was gonna change and progress under the same direction. Those parents of children who cannot let go of the past in order to progress are the ones who are doing the slamming on this post.

Darlington is a special place! Our family is thankful to have been a part of it for the last 15 years. The school has created a strong foundation for our children and I would not trade that for anything! We must not let the unity among Darlington families and that "sense of community" weaken. I hope that Darlington never forget it's legacy, one that was created by an emotional connection of students and faculty (some who lived and raised their own children on the beautiful campus) who had a heart full of RESPECT AND ADMIRATION for each other. God Bless our school! "The legacy we leave is not just in our possessions, but in the quality of our lives and how we make people feel. " - B. Graham

Bout Time. After dismissing Darlington's most beloved tradition, Jim Van Es and invading every child in the Darlington community's personal lives, it is about time Whitworth gets a little of his own medicine. See ya, not going to miss ya.

So many people hating on TW because of the Jim Van Es issue. I like Jim, but I also trust the TW knew what he was doing. Look at the positive changes made at Darlington since TW took over. Not saying he was perfect, but he definitely didn't "ruin the school"

Trust what TW was doing? Really? Like firing the most loved, respected, and admired icon of the school...ONLY because Jim's longstanding position and admiration was perceived as a threat? No, he gets very little credit. Most of anything positive that came during his tenure cam in spite of him, not because of him. That's a fact.

A threat to what? If they wanted JVE to be Headmaster, they would have put him there once the opening came, not after TW was hired.

Although not a legal thief, the fact that this guy has made off with more than $200,000 a year to "lead" this school for the last however many years is egregious.

In his bio, it should read: "In helping Darlington raise the $22 million for a gaudy and grossly overpriced Middle School, Whitworth along the way sacrificed one of the school's TRUE legends - Jim Van Es, a man with more courage and integrity in one finger than Whitworth will ever have.

"Additionally, he FAILED on the one goal he said from the day he was hired that he would make good on: making teacher salaries competitive with peer schools."

90 million so-called dollars later, Darlington's hard working, dedicated faculty are no nearer the top half of its peer schools than when this mover and shaker took his throne.

A collective "yes!" must have gone up Friday from the faculty, staff and a huge portion of the alumni base when this bully and iron-fisted "leader" made his announcement. Indeed, he'll leave Darlington a better place than he found it, but it's only because he's leaving.

To the Board of Trustees - shame on you for allowing this man to run off more good people in the last 7 or 8 years than I care to mention. And allowing him to insulate his power hungry rule with weak leaders - indeed, "yes men," as fudpucker put it - and smiting those who took a stand against him is just as bad.

BUT HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS, BoT: You can get it right on the next one. You charge an unbelievable amount of money to educate children there. You badger a stretched alumni base for dollar after dollar. Darlington parents and alumni deserve not only a national search, but a global one. Their money deserves the best possible headmaster candidate you can find. Turning it over in-house would be a huge mistake. Find a compassionate human - and a true teacher - unlike this detached, cold, dictator, and get Darlington back to the golden years it so richly deserves.

And I laugh every time I hear about Darlington reaching $90 million. Too bad people don't know the real truth behind every dollar "raised" there.

Anyway, congratulations, Darlington faculty - especially you, Sam Moss - the dark days of Tomlington are almost over.

This is GREAT NEWS. It can't happen fast enough. This guy just about destroyed the school. Total control freak and could care less about the traditions and history of Darlington. He dumbed down the staff by putting in "yes" men, ran off some of our best teachers, and totally alienated alumni with how he handled Jim Van Es. And speaking of which, the Board of Trustees who stood beside this dweeb needs to go too. The second he's gone, the school should hire back Jim Van Es as Interim Headmaster. That would be sweet revenge.

Best news to come out of Darlington in years. Upon Whitworth's departure, perhaps the school can begin to heal from all the deception, fear, and divisiveness that now permeates virtually every aspect of Darlington's operations. 18 months can't come soon enough for the departure of this cold spin master. Hopefully the next headmaster chosen will not lead as a cut throat dictator interested only power and will instead take a genuine interest in this community, the students being served, and legitimate parental concerns.

The lasting legacy TW can take pride in is the total decimation of competitive athletic programs at Darlington

Darlington's girls are having their best basketball season in history. The football team had another good year on the field with an unfortunate first round playoff draw. The soccer academy continues to attract top rate talent and the spring sports are poised for great success. Only basketball has struggled and that is because they are very young and play a tough schedule. So what possible factual support backs up your assertion?

OK Seer. You named one sport (Girls Bball) which has a total of 12 players in the entire HS program. You name the Soccer Academy which is not a HS sport. The Dar student body have no idea when, where, how, time, etc the soccer academy plays soccer at any time of the year and could not care whether they win or lose. The same can be said for the Dar Soccer Academy players on whether it is basketball, football, baseball season. They could care less what other sports are in season and would never attend a game. The football team plays schools with 13 players. So, you are the one mistaken.

I just want to know the details of each sport he decimated and what he did to decimate them.

Tom would love to see Darlington play up in Class AA. How would you like to put Calhoun and the boys back on the schedule just so you can play rivalries with schools like Model and Armuchee?

I disagree that he's wrecked the programs, but in his ridiculous love of the Soccer Academy is an absolute joke. The SA helps the bottom line, but adds zero culture to the school and kills the varsity boys' and girls' programs.

TW decimated Darlington athletics?? Hmmm... Is that why football won 3 region championships from 2009-2011, went to the State Final 4 in 2009, and has sent many players on to play at the next level, including Nigel Matthews playing for Boston College? Baseball has also sent 2 to play at Georgia Tech and has won region titles and made it deep into the playoffs. What other Floyd County school has done that? Not to mention Soccer Academy pumps out college players. Not all are from other areas, either. One of the best, Myles Englis, plays for Creighton who went to the NCAA Soccer Final 4, is from Rome and has went to Darlington for 12 years. Get your facts together before posting, homeboy.

This is the best news I've heard today. I might actually start back giving money to Darlington once he's gone. The past two Headmasters have had a great resume, only to be a disaster as an administrator. The way this guy treated Jim Van Es is enough to have him tarred and feathered.

As a Darlington parent, I too am delighted to hear that Mr. Whitworth is moving on. The devisiveness he has created has not been good for the school. And, in terms of fundraising, why doesn't someone give Jim Van Es credit for his fundraising efforts on behalf of the new middle school? It seems the school wanted him to "stay around" until the new middle school was completed and then--goodbye Jim we no longer need you, after 42 years!!. Such a sad commentary on the lack of backbone by the Darlington Board, no one stood up for Jim. Good riddance Tom, you accomplished your mission by ridding the school of an icon.

Since you're a Dar parent, can you tell me what TW has done to worsen your child's education and experience at Darlington?
