Half-Rome, half-Valdosta based band K!d Dynamite has the bluesy-alternative sound one might hear in an Athens bar for a pricey cover charge. But the love of music is the band’s number one priority.

Adam Sikes of Rome and Mike Tappan of Valdosta were roommates at Valdosta State when they formed K!d Dynamite after realizing they shared a love of music. Jam sessions came naturally to them.

“I taught myself how to play drums while Mike was playing the guitar and we got along well and just formed a band.” Sikes said.

Whenever the duo wants to perform they schedule shows in Valdosta or Rome. The five-hour trip isn’t an issue.

“I don’t mind driving up here.” Tappan said, “We have a bigger following in Rome and both locations are very supportive and we have a great turnout.”

“There are so many talented musicians in Rome that all look out for each other which is why it’s so great to play here. People who love music really should get out and experience it first hand.” Sikes said of playing in Rome.

Tappan and Sikes consider themselves a southern blues group but are influenced by an array of artists, from Hendrix to the White Stripes to the Black Keys.

They performed at the 400 Block Bar earlier this month for their CD release show.

“You know a band is pretty good when you hear a song that’s so good you think it’s a cover of an already famous song,” said Sydney Adair, who considers herself K!d Dynamite’s biggest fan.

K!d Dynamite will play again in the Roots Rock for Women’s Lives benefit show sponsored by the Women of WORTH on Saturday at the 400 Block Bar on Broad Street starting at 10 a.m. The event also will feature music by John Lee Hookers and Atomic Boogie.

Admission is $10 and includes a raffle ticket and one drink ticket.
