IRS places $65,000 tax lien on city of Aragon

The Internal Revenue Service has placed a $65,000 tax lien against the City of Aragon as a result of unpaid federal withholding taxes, including penalties and interest.

This represents an estimated nine percent of the current $725,000 budget.

Aragon Mayor Ken Suffridge called the lien an unexpected setback and stated that it will directly affect the financial operations of the city. Because of the lien, Suffridge has placed the purchase of all non-essential programs on hold, including the purchase of a new police car.

Some of the unpaid taxes date back to 2003, according to Suffridge, who took office in January 2012. He also explained that the City of Aragon has not had an official audit since 2007. “An annual audit would have raised a red flag to many of these issues,” he said. “I am looking forward to overcoming this financial crisis.”

When asked why the city has not conducted an official audit in five years, Suffridge said there were several reasons. “It’s been explained to me that the lack of an audit is because of a computer crash that took place in 2008. Records were lost because of that. We also had a water pipe break, and that destroyed a bunch of records,” Suffridge said. “It is extremely hard to catch up once you get behind.”

The city’s financial issue is further complicated by the loss of thousands of dollars due to uncollected city taxes and fees. Approximately 93 percent of the city’s tax revenue comes from residential property.

The mayor called this "an unexpected setback." What does he expect to happen when money is withheld but not remitted? There hasn't been an audit in over five years! Sounds like it's time for the city's incorporation papers to be relinquished and the management be that of an unincorporated community within the County. No need for a separate police force in Aragon. The police can't stop crime within the City, they can only prey on drivers on HWY 101 who might break the speed limit slightly. Aragon's reputation has never been stellar, but for the past several years it has digressed to squalid.

This is an awesome story. Seems like every county in this region has at least one of "these" little towns in it- strife with financial issues, rampant meth heads, theft, 8 police cars for a force of 3, and either a speed trap or a place you avoid altogether. Aragon's financial saving grace is Ga 101- it's cash cow. Bartow's joke town is Kingston. Polk's = Aragaon. Chattooga = too many to list. What is Floyd's ??

Were they withholding from the employees' checks but not turning it in to IRS or were they not withholding the taxes from employees' checks? Why would you need an audit to catch that?

Don’t I know it! I recently moved here from Iowa. I travel through there a couple times a week. On average, every second or third time driving through I see someone pulled over. EVERY time I travel through I see at least one patrol car. The message is blatantly obvious (not that speeding is the right thing to do). I just set my cruise to about 42 mph, so no worries! (Note to dumpcake: thanks for the heads up regarding “Too fast for conditions” tickets; I’ll take that into consideration!)

There was a time in the past when they were giving Too Fast For Conditions tickets in place of speeding tickets because the fines were higher.

I could be mistaken, but I seem to remember the Police chief in Aragon being quoted in that story saying something along the lines of "you can be driving within the speed limit, but be driving too fast for conditions"

I would search for the link, but I'm pretty sure RN-T bans off site links.

According to Ga Code 40-5-57, “driving too fast for conditions” is a violation and can get you a ticket but 0 points. Of course, if you are a habitual violator all bets are off when you go before the Judge.
