The spill went into Burwell Creek and then into the Oostanaula River, downstream from the city's raw water intake at Ridge Ferry Park, Ross said.
Update:The cause of a sewer spill Tuesday near Rome High School has been fixed but the Water Reclamation Facilities lab has been notified to monitor the stream for issues, according to a Rome Water and Sewer Department report.
The water and sewer department was notified about the spill around 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday in a creek near the rear entrance to the high school on Wolf Drive. Approximately 18,000 gallons of sewage was discharged into Burwell Creek.
The spill site is being cleaned and the water, held in place by two beaver dams, is being pumped back into the sewer system, the report stated.
