Sometimes it’s difficult to meet single people with similar situations and backgrounds, which is why Vicki Hodges has been coordinating and organizing events for Singles for Christ for close to 15 years.

Hodges came to Rome in 1969 and is a faithful member of Lakeview Baptist Church. When she and her husband separated she decided it was still important for her to go out, have fun and meet other Christian people instead of staying at home.

“There aren’t enough churches that provide a group for single people to gather for fellowship so I decided to take on a responsibility by coordinating Singles for Christ after the group was neglected. It’s a way for single to meet the right way by not going out to the bars,” she says.

The Facebook page Hodges maintains states, “This is a group for Christian individuals of all Christian denominations who wish to meet other Christian single individuals.”

The group meets at least once a week for a movie, First Friday concerts or dinner where an array of topics are discussed with colorful people, “We even talk about politics sometimes” Hodges says “and that can be trouble which is why people stay away from it but it’s all in good fun. We’re a lot of fun and really welcoming.”

Augusta Spearman has been involved with the group for six years and shares Hodges’s enthusiasm.

“This is important and a good place for people who are single to meet for fellowship and have a good time,” Spearman says.

Singles for Christ has had success according to both Spearman and Hodges, more members are always welcome.

“It is nice now, but it was more successful with relationships when Singles for Christ was much larger” Spearman says of the now smaller group “we could always use more members.”

Singles for Christ will meet at Johnny’s Pizza on Broad St. today at 6 p.m.
