Maria Tabuena, 29, of Calhoun, and her passenger, 4-year-old Melina Trichell, both died as a result of the wreck.
According to a press release from the Georgia State Patrol, Tabuena and Melina were traveling in a 1998 Ford Expedition northbound in the right lane of I-75 at Exit 293 at about 1:25 p.m. when the tractor trailer changed lanes from the center lane to the right lane and struck the Expedition in the left side with the right side of the trailer.
The truck continued northbound while the Expedition ran off the road on the right side, struck a guardrail, hit an overhead sign support post and then became engulfed in flames.
Georgia State Troopers have interviewed several witnesses attempting to gather information to identify the truck. They are on the lookout for a late 90s “long-nose” Peterbilt tractor, maroon in color, and pulling a silver trailer with damage to the right side.
Anyone with information about the truck and the driver, or anyone who may have witnessed the crash, is asked to call the Georgia State Patrol post in Cartersville at 770-387-3701.
