The dry weather may have been the spark that kept Rome-Floyd firefighters busy on Sunday dousing woods and grass fires around Floyd County.

“They are scattered throughout the county,” said Battalion Chief Phil Taylor of the Rome-Floyd Fire Department on Sunday afternoon.

Grass and woods fires were reported in Shannon off Ga. 140 and off Blacks Bluff Road, Taylor said. No structures were damaged, and no injuries were reported during any of the fires.

Floyd County is at a rainfall deficit for the month of November. As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, 1.08 inches of rain had fallen in the county, according to data from AccuWeather.com. The normal month-to-date total is 3.59 inches.

The county also lags behind in yearly rainfall totals. Only 38.53 inches of rain has fallen this year. The normal year-to-date total is 48.65 inches.

Taylor cited residents burning leaves as a possible cause in some fires.

There is no burn ban in effect, Taylor noted.

The area may see some relief tonight as the National Weather Service is predicting rain. There is an 80 percent chance of rain tonight and an 80 percent chance of rain Tuesday.

However, the rain will not linger, and sunny skies are expected by Wednesday.
