Two developers are asking the Rome City Commission for extensions on their memorandums of understanding to buy city-owned properties.

The board will consider the separate requests from R.H. Ledbetter Properties Inc. and David Doss of Samson Developers at its meeting tonight.

Commissioners caucus at 5 p.m. and start their regular session at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, 601 Broad St. Both meetings are open to the public.

Ledbetter set up Riverside Parkway Partners LLC to build CitiCenter, a 300,000-square-foot commercial center on 83 acres stretching from Turner McCall Boulevard to undeveloped land across from Ridge Ferry Park.

The property contains wetlands, Burwell Creek and a closed municipal dump. The original memorandum of understanding, signed in April 2007, has been extended twice to allow the company to do what’s needed to obtain environmental permits.

The current agreement is set to expire Dec. 31. The new request from E. Wright Ledbetter seeks a two-year extension.

Samson Developers’ memorandum of understanding to buy 4.4 acres on West Third Street expired last week. Doss is asking for a 61-day extension, to Jan. 2, 2013.

“Often times a delay indicates a setback but … this delay is due to an unexpected positive development that has arisen,” he wrote in an Oct. 31 letter to the board.

Phase I plans call for Duke Hospitality, a Mariott-approved management company, to own and operate a five-story hotel with more than 100 rooms on half the site. Duke has approached the Floyd County Commission about also managing The Forum, which would have to be modernized.
