Incumbent and Republican David Cox secured another term as the District 2 representative for the Floyd County Board of Education, Tuesday night’s election results report.

Unofficial jurisdiction wide results show that Cox, a Republican won the race with 14,444 votes (62.02 percent) against Democrat Everett Ballard who had 6,992 votes (30.02 percent).

After long months of relentless campaigning efforts, Cox said he was ecstatic about his win.

“It’s just very humbling, I have never done this before, I’m talking about ran in an election like this,” Cox said shortly after results came in. “I was just very pleased and I just want to make sure I do a great job for them now that they’ve put their confidence in me.”

Ballard, a retired business man said he supposed Floyd County wasn’t ready to move forward.

“I thought I worked pretty hard,” Ballard said. “I guess Floyd County’s not ready for a change. I guess everyone’s still staying with that old system they’ve got going and they’re not ready to move forward.”

Ballard said he didn’t plan to run for office in the future.

“I thought I had a chance in this one, but obviously the Republicans show different,” he said. “I guess that’s the way it goes.”

Cox, a retired school teacher, said both he and Ballard ran a good race.

“Everett is good man and he ran a very good campaign, he put up lots of signs and it was a very positive campaign and I’m pleased nothing ever went negative,” Cox said.

Now that the heat of the race is behind him, Cox said his future goals and concerns lend to doing the right thing for Floyd County students and teachers.

“I was an educator for 30 years and I just want to make sure we keep on improving on academic achievement and that our teachers have all the resources they need to be great teachers,” Cox said.

Uncontested board members Brian Barcomb (R) and George Bevels (D) also maintained their seats for the coming term. According to unofficial jurisdiction wide results, Bevels came out of the race with 16,394 votes and Barcomb had 17,722.
