ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta police are investigating a fiery death in a motorized wheelchair.

Police have not yet released the name of the man who was found in a ditch in southwest Atlanta about 5 p.m. Saturday. Witness Melvin Swinger told WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/RLrFPe ) that he heard someone hollering and spotted the man on fire. Another witness, Marty Franklin, said six or seven people tried to save the man, but the flames were too great. Firefighters were at a nearby grocery store and responded quickly. But they said the wheelchair was engulfed in flames when they arrived.

A police spokesman said the cause of the fire is under investigation. Police are also trying to determine why the man was in a wooded area between a restaurant and a dollar store.
