LETTER TO THE EDITOR: America in deep economic trouble

WE ARE in deep trouble if we let the present administration have a second term. These almost four years have been a dismal failure. Our president has no idea about how to govern or to grow an economy.

He is the most divisive president we have had in my years of paying attention. I recently received a letter that better expresses what I am saying.

“Under Barack Obama, America isn’t working — literally or figuratively. The statistics are as shocking as they are disappointing:

The jobless rate has been above 8 percent since February 2009 — a dismal span unequaled in recorded history. More than 23 million Americans are struggling to find work.

More Americans have lost their jobs under President Obama than under any other president in modern history.

More than 30 percent of single moms are struggling in poverty. New business startups are at the lowest level in 30 years. Millions of homes have been foreclosed on; and there will be four consecutive trillion-dollar deficits by the end of the president’s term in office.”

These figures are grim. There is no telling what kind of disastrous future we will have if he is elected again.

God help us and spare us is my humble prayer.

chrw,

I was researching your claims and came across this.

From FOX News and repeated on lots of right wing conspiracy sites.

"nyone remember these PROMISES made by candidate Barack Hussein Obama back in 2008?

“I promise 100% transparency in my administration.”

“I promise NO NEW TAXES on a family making less than $250K a year.”

“I will allow 5 days of public comment before I sign any bills.”

“I will remove earmarks for PORK projects before I sign any bill.”

“I will end Income Tax for seniors making less than $50K a year.”

“I’ll put the Health Care negotiations on CSPAN so everyone can see who is at the table!!”

“Shovel ready jobs…..!!”

Other promises made in 2008 include:

–He promised to close down Gitmo

–He promised to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

So...Do do you really want debate stuff from wingnut sites?

Obama's not perfect...I have admitted that many times. However he is so much better than the alternative.

Former Roman,

I am not surprised that when presented with factual data you have nothing to say.

Watchingit,

Yes you are right there are LOTS of angry white people out there.

Too bad they are a minority.

BTW Dinash D Souza is a moron.

Ah, rhuidean, you misinterpreted the intent of my remark. You do not understand sarcasm and have no sense of humor.

Most of the blather from the left is just distraction from what is happening in this world of ours. Is anyone at all paying attention? It seems the President would rather campaign and talk to friendly media about local sports and regional cuisine instead of Iran, Israel, and the Middle East. Fifty-nine days since his last press conference. Well when it hits the fan, we can blame him for his inattention.

One question? Now that Hillary has said “NO” and we are left with Biden, can you imagine him as president if something happened to propel him into that role? By all reports Biden’s “handlers” have whisked him home, and Obama’s "handlers" have reinstated the teleprompter.I have noticed that “moron” is the left’s favorite word for anyone who does not think as they do. Since you shared your credentials, check out D’Souza’s and Klein’s.

You know my point of view, I know yours. End of this conversation.

Former Roman,

Yes I baited you.....And it was Goooooood. :)

I think that Romney and Ryan calling 716 Billion in medicare savings cuts is simply a method to allow FOX and friends to cue the outrage machine.

The cuts to Medicare Advantage have zero Effect on patient care.

Here are the words directly from the letter to Speaker Boehner from the CBO advising him that repealing Obamacare would increase the deficit.

Begin Quote:

Impact on the Federal Budget in the First Decade

Assuming that H.R. 6079 is enacted near the beginning of fiscal year 2013,

CBO and JCT estimate that, on balance, the direct spending and revenue

effects of enacting that legislation would cause a net increase in federal

budget deficits of $109 billion over the 2013–2022 period. End Quote.

I am providing a link to the letter so you can read it yourself.

http://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/cbofiles/attachments/43471-hr6079.pdf

I constantly remind you that the deficit has been reduced since Obama took office and will decrease greatly once the Bush tax cuts expire.

Here is the CBO Link so you can see the raw data.

http://cbo.gov/publication/41486

The CBO estimates Medicare will run out of money in 2024. Without Obamacare it would run out of money in 2016. So yes Obamacare is good for medicare.

Where did you come up with your figures on jobs lost? The bureau of labor statistics stated that for the last 22 months the US has added jobs.

http://www.bls.gov/schedule/archives/empsit_nr.htm#2009

You continually rant about budgets not being passed. Just like every bill Obama has submitted the senate filibustered it. But...Do not worry after November when the Democrats get rid of the filibuster that will change.

BTW I received my BS in Business from San Diego State and MS in marine engineering from the Naval Post Graduate School. I am currently working on my MBA from the University of Maryland.

My point is still germane to this topic. Romney and Ryan are going all out to convince their base. (Angry White People) that they can win.

The problem is that ethnic minorities outnumber that base.

That's why you hear all the screeching about. " Taking our country back"

I get that many people do not agree with Obama's policies...

The problem is that same base cannot articulate what the point of disagreement is.

Instead that base makes outlandish claims about birth certificates, Muslim religion and racist diatribes.

It does not help convince anyone that there is a real policy argument.

So yes i maintain that Romney/Ryan are desperately appealing to low information poorly educate voters.

lee Atwater laid out the "Southern Strategy" and the GOP has followed it ever since.

Rhuidean – just like ole’ Josh from Shorter – you are full of yourself – nothing but hot air. You do a pretty “cute” job yourself of cut-and-paste from all the talking points found on the liberal sites. That’s why they are always in list format instead of conversation style. All your points are really nothing but wishful thinking anyway. If your “job” in the Middle East finds you unable to see the movie, 2016, you could get the book by Dinash D’Souza which it is based on and read it. Maybe even Ed Klein’s book, “The Amateur”. Both books are in the top 10 New York Political Book Best Seller List. Both are available as E-books.

Gosh, there sure are a lot of “poorly educated”, “angry white people” out there. Both phrases are assumptions on your part. You really have no idea who you are in a discussion with, do you?

Oh, and for your information, there are only 8 years between 2016 and 2024. Eight short years!

You mean those same "cuts" Paul Ryan has in his budget FR? Either you don't know what you're talking about, or you'll only accept cuts from waste, abuse, and fraud if it is a Republican doing the cutting. I think its the former.

Xavier-"Cuts" in waste fraud and abuse-That is called ENFORCEMENT..If they can "cut" that much, why haven't they been enforcing the rules?..

FormerRoman,

I commented on Medicare/Medicaid specifically to see which ill informed person would repeat the Romney campaign's zombie lie regarding those programs.

Congratulations...You win the prize for lack of knowledge.

You Wrote:Obama just raided Medicare for 700 Billion dollars to fund Obamacare

I reply: Here's the true story regarding this claim.

The origin of the $716 billion number the Republicans are throwing around is from a letter the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office sent to John Boehner explaining how expensive it would be to repeal Obama's health care law. Among the costs of repeal would be an additional $716 billion in Medicare spending over the next ten years.

ObamaCare come in three roughly-equal parts. About 35% of the savings comes from paying lower reimbursements to hospitals, which accepted this deal because they know they will have a lot more insured customers who will make up for any loss in profits. About 30% of the savings came from tightening up the private insurance known as Medicare Advantage.

In other words, the Affordable Care and Patient Protection Act made Medicare a lot more efficient, but it didn't do anything to reduce anyone's Medicare benefits. The Affordable Care Act rolls back payment rates for hospitals and insurers. It does not, however, change the basket of benefits that patients have access to. In other words it's all a big lie. Romney/Ryan are calling cost savings due to Obamacare "Cuts". I however want a government that actually figures out how to save money. Same as Obamacare.

You Wrote: .Medicare goes broke in 2024 and Obama's plan is to do NOTHING.

I reply: Please cite your source for this claim. Obamacare strengthens Medicare and the Congressional Budget office agrees.

You Wrote: Ryan's plan saves Medicare and doesn't affect anyone under 52-53..

I reply: Ryan's plan ends medicare as we know it. The plan gives seniors vouchers that are valued below the rising cost of healthcare and tells them that's all they get.

Is tells the younger generations " To bad I got mine" Ryan's tax plan raises taxes on 98% of Americans and adds trillions to the deficit.

You Wrote:If Obama has created so many jobs-why hasn't the unemployment numbers dropped below 8% as PROMISED.

I reply: That's easy...Republicans have blocked every jobs bill the president has proposed or submitted. Instead they have focused on Prayer, Abortion, oh and repealing Obamacare 31 times. No help there......

You WroteThe stimulus was a MASSIVE failure and GM still owes the American people 25 Billion which we will never recoup. He threw Billions of dollars at unemployment and didn't make a dent.

I reply: The CBO says that the stimulus created millions of jobs. If you want to continue to insist otherwise then Ok good luck with that.

The right wing vowed from the day of President Obama's inauguration to never work with him. Well that have kept that promise. In the process millions of Americans are hurting because that agenda was more important than doing what was right. Our economy was crashed by crazy right wing republicans, Two wars were put on the nations credit card by those same people. When our nations credit rating was damaged by those same ideological terrorists Tea party morons cheered. Romney and Ryan are just more of the same...

I continue to be amazed that low education, low information voters continue to support representatives who repeatedly vote for the millionaires and billionaires.

Rhudi...

You are a jewel..So, You baited me?..LOL

You have absolutely no knowledge of the world except what you can google from the Huffington Post.

If Obama takes 716 Billion from Medicare and "strengthens" it-You win the prize..Maybe we can spend our way to prosperity while we're at it..

The deficit will soon hit 16 trillion and 5.5 of this happened during Obamas time in office.

If Obama has helped Medicare, why is it still projected to go broke in 2024?..These are numbers which are readily available.

If Medicare is not reformed the youth of today(20-45) will have nothing.

Why didn't Obama listen to his debt commission?

Erskine Bowles-a democrat says we are headed off the fiscal cliff..

Why hasn't Obama passed a budget in 3 and half years?..97-0 against in the SENATE.Dang that right wing Senate!

Since you bring education into the conversation-

Care to offer up where you matriculated?

Obama has lost 4 Million additional jobs since he took office..I suppose you didn't see the new numbers for first time unemployment claims this week-366,000 and of course they'll be revised up as usual.

If you think things can't get worse than they are now just vote Obama and he will prove it again. One would have to be ignorant if they can't look around and come to the conclusion that Obama has failed. He also knows he has failed and that is why he and his ignorant followers have resulted to false attack adds. It has been comical listening to these lies and watching them try to back track when they have been proven wrong. It has become a disgrace. If a Liberals mouth is moving that is a clue they are lying. The state of our country should not be a shock to any person with common sense because we knew that Obama was not qualified for the position. All hope is lost under Obama and it's time for a change.

I will vote against Obama for one reason. Things have got worse. Then the next time I will vote against the next president until we get one that makes things better. If you don't solve the problems we don't need you. It doesn't matter why, by failing to proform the needed task you prove to be the wrong person for the job. They have all had the good education. Most have proven themselves in business. But two words will solve the problems in washington. Common sense! I don't think it's allowed in washington today. For a job so important to our families, friends and country. We can afford no excuses, no sympathy or mercy. Make it happen or get out.

Talmadge,

You Wrote : WE ARE in deep trouble if we let the present administration have a second term. These almost four years have been a dismal failure.

I reply: Ok you are entitled to your opinion. However I challenge you are any other conservative to explain with measurable data how the last 4 years have been a failure….No Name calling…Just facts… And no lies from FOX News, Bill O Reilly and Rush Limbaugh……

You Wrote: Our president has no idea about how to govern or to grow an economy.

I reply: Got any facts to back up that statement?

You Wrote: He is the most divisive president we have had in my years of paying attention.

I reply: I am guessing you slept through the Bush years?

You Wrote: The jobless rate has been above 8 percent since February 2009 — a dismal span unequaled in recorded history. More than 23 million Americans are struggling to find work. More Americans have lost their jobs under President Obama than under any other president in modern history.

I reply: Are you serious? You really are citing data from 2009? When Obama had been president for 9 days? When Obama took office America was losing 800,000 jobs a month. Since then President Obama has created millions of jobs. In fact his administration has created more jobs than were lost in the crash of 2008. (Source- Bureau of Labor Statistics.)

You Wrote: More than 30 percent of single moms are struggling in poverty. New business startups are at the lowest level in 30 years. Millions of homes have been foreclosed on; and there will be four consecutive trillion-dollar deficits by the end of the president’s term in office.

I reply: Other than a zombie letter from a right wing super pac do you have any data to substantiate your claim?

You Wrote: These figures are grim. There is no telling what kind of disastrous future we will have if he is elected again.God help us and spare us is my humble prayer.

I reply: I do not believe in god…..But if there was one then don't you think he/she would be on the side of the weak and poor? Do you really think god would support millionaires, Billionaires and racist white people exclusively.

Your entire letter is completely filled with inaccurate and false assertions.

The choice in this election is simple.

Romney and Ryan will destroy medicare and medicaid is elected. Assistance to the poor will be slashed. BUT….Taxes on the rich will be reduced to pay for it. This is the Ryan budget that the house approved….

So if all you average middle class folk want to vote for those millionaires promoting tax cuts for billionaires then go ahead.

The monumental stupidity of that course of action is mind boggling.

Paul Ryan idolized an Atheist (Ayn Rand) for his entire adult life.

Paul Ryan voted for Medicare Part D, when Bush didn't have a way to pay for it.

Mister Fiscal Conservative Paul Ryan voted for No Child Left Behind, when Bush had no way of paying for it.

Paul Ryan publicly trashed stimulus, while secretly asking for it.

You don't know Paul Ryan. Talking about "misguided"...typical conservative. Go play your banjo.

Rosebush, that's a valid question. The answer is, that even Ayn Rand accepted the fact that John Galt is a fictional character, after getting old and ended up on the government's dime. She wasn't a wild radical, when it came time to draw those Social Security checks, and Medicare.

Nice try, Xavier. Nothing can take away from her belief in the power of the human mind and her works. Bottom line - As a fellow Roman Catholic, I can appreciate Ryan’s admiration for her ideals and her belief that socialism was evil. Her philosophical beliefs are conservative and I can separate them from her views on religion.

She ’reluctantly’ allowed her legal representative to sign her up for Social Security and Medicare at the age of 71. She died at the age of 77 after a very productive life.

Government’s dime? Wild radical? Like I said, ‘nice try’.

ElephantWhip, the media will provide both of us with what we believe to be the truth. We could keep this up forever, but I have yard signs to deliver. You have a nice afternoon.

August 12, 2012- The National Journal FAIRMONT, W.Va.(and other news outlets): - After giving then-Sen. Barack Obama a full-throttled endorsement in the 2008 presidential election, the United Mine Workers of America has decided not to endorse either Obama or the presumptive Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, in 2012.“As of right now, we’ve elected to stay out of this election,” said Mike Caputo, a UMWA official and a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates. “Our members right now have indicated to stay out of this race, and that’s why we’ve done that.... I don’t think quite frankly that coalfield folks are crazy about either candidate.”

Both candidates are trying to prove otherwise to voters in coal-intensive swing states. Earlier this week the Obama campaign released in Ohio the first coal-issue ad of this cycle, claiming that Romney has flip-flopped his position on coal. The ad includes comments that Romney made as Massachusetts governor in 2003 standing in front of a coal plant, saying that he wouldn’t support jobs that kill people.

For his part, Romney is claiming Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency is waging a war on coal with a slew of regulations.
