CEDARTOWN — A second man is in jail on charges relating to an incident where a car struck a child Sunday night, according to a Cedartown Police Department official.

Assistant Police Chief Jamie Newsome said Almasi Lyles, 26, of 622 Jefferson St., Cedartown, was arrested at 8 p.m. Monday. He faces charges of serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and drag racing, Newsome said.

Darius Jamal Strong, 22, of 537 Irwin St., Cedartown, had already been charged in the incident, but now faces a new charge of drag racing, according to Newsome.

Newsome said the child, Elijah Diamond, 8, is recovering in an Atlanta hospital.

He said police had been investigating the Jefferson Street incident as a reckless driving case until officers heard rumors of drag racing.
