Today marks the first day of classes for Rome City Schools after the summer break. From Southeast Elementary to Rome High School, the surrounding streets will be busy with students navigating sidewalks and buses safely collecting them.

Rome police officers will be posted outside each of the schools to monitor and ensure things are running smoothly, according to Rome Police Maj. Denise Downer-McKinney.

Downer-McKinney warned that drivers should keep in mind the flashing lights that alert them for school zones and to be cautious of bus traffic to prevent any injury.

Speeding in school zones will be monitored as well. With extra traffic around schools, she recommends that drivers leave a little earlier.

Both Unity Christian School and the Georgia School for the Deaf start

on Monday. Floyd County Schools and St. Mary’s Catholic School go back to classes on Aug. 8. Berry College Elementary and Middle

School starts Aug. 10. Darlington School returns Aug. 20.

What happened to the good old days when you started school the LAST WEEK of August? As a West Rome Band member, this was the week we started our 3 weeks of Band Camp. What happened to "summer break?" I know they have spread some things out, and increased breaks here and there, but this seems a bit much. Seems like starting school this early would promote an early drop out rate in retaliation. Just saying....

The kids basically have no summer break - especially if they are involved in any sports that practice during the summer.

As far as West Rome goes... we had no air and only ceiling fans. Could you imagine sitting in those class rooms in this heat. The band room was the only place with air!
