Fifty-two players made the 18-hole cut and will compete over 18 more holes on Tuesday to determine qualifiers for the U.S. Amateur Championship, taking place at The Brickyard at Riverside in Macon.

Leading after the first round are Dean Hester of Dublin, Ga., Corey Carlson of Green Cove Springs, Fla., and Patrick Newcomb of Benton, Ky., who both turned in a 4-under par 68. The starting field of 104 players was cut to the low 30 percent (32 players) and anyone within eight strokes of the leader (76).

The top five finishers after 36 holes qualify for the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., August 13-19, 2012.

Entries were open to any amateur golfer with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4.

The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association.
