Work won’t start on the Urban Riverfront project until Monday, but the Town Green fountain was briefly blocked by another project on Tuesday.

Floyd County Facilities Manager Ryan Davis said crews are building a protective shed over the fountain’s pumps and filters. It may take them the rest of the week to finish up the details and add some landscaping.

“We’ll be doing a few things off to the side, but it won’t affect the fountain,” David said. “It was back on by the afternoon.”

Astra Group has been scheduled to begin the riverfront plaza construction this week, but a long-planned wedding at The Forum took precedence.

“They had rented the whole Forum, so the contractor agreed to delay a week,” Rome Public Works Director Jamie McCord said. “You’ll see full mobilization Monday.”

The project includes a boat dock and access to the Oostanaula River at the Town Green. Crews will be staging their equipment on the grass in front of The Forum.

McCord said the play-in fountain will remain on during the work, but he’s already had some complaints about plans to close off the Chief John Ross Pedestrian Bridge between West Third Street and The Forum.

“There’s just no way around it,” he said. “You can’t deal with pedestrians in a construction zone on a daily basis.”

The bulk of the funding for the $2.7 million project comes from a federal grant. Construction will take about a year.
