A home officials believe was vacant was destroyed by fire late Tuesday night in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood.

A neighbor called 911 at about 11:30 p.m. after hearing what she described as a loud boom and then seeing the flames at 318 Robin Hood Road.

Firefighters fought the blaze under a slight drizzle as thunder and lightning lit up the sky with sounds and color past midnight.

Battalion Chief Troy Brock of the Rome-Floyd Fire Department said it appeared the house was vacant. He also said the fire marshal would be called in to investigate the cause.

Several other residents in the area agree that the home had been unoccupied for some time, and they also described hearing a loud noise just before the fire broke out.
