Weather system could produce hail, lightning

A weather system moving through Floyd County, particularly in the southern portion of the county, has the potential to produce dime-sized hail and frequent cloud to ground lightning with wind gusts up to 40 mph.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement that will be in effect until at least 8:15 p.m. The system entered Floyd near Cave Spring and is headed northeast at 20 mph.

The forecast for the evening includes a high chance of storms before 2 a.m.

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely today and some of the storms could produce gusty winds and frequent lightning, according to the National Weather Service.
