Shorter University has hired three staff members in its Office for University Advancement. Neely Raper, a 2000 graduate of Shorter, is serving as Director of Development. Sheri Ransome has been named Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving. Both began work at Shorter in June. In addition, Loni Beth Jones, a 2011 Shorter graduate, was recently hired to serve as Office Coordinator for the Advancement division.

“We are definitely excited about the new additions to our team,” said Bert Epting, vice president for university advancement at Shorter. “The experience they bring to annual giving, development, and the alumni experience will make for many opportunities to engage and grow the Shorter Family for years to come. They are passionate about higher education and passionate about serving the Lord in all they do. We are blessed to have Sheri, Neely and Loni Beth as a part of the Shorter Family.”

Mr. Raper will lead Shorter’s development efforts through personal and corporate solicitation, events, and through sharing his experiences as a Shorter alumnus. He came to Shorter from Avalon Industrial Products, LLC, where he had served as general manager since 2010. He also has served as general manager and partner at Sunbelt Turf Farms, LLC, in Calhoun and as a sales manager with Turfgrass America. A combat veteran, Mr. Raper was in the U.S. Army, serving as an assistant to the battalion commander. He participated in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. In 1989, he was named Soldier of the Year for the 24th Infantry Division; in addition, he was a two-time Soldier of the Quarter for the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment.

Mr. Raper graduated from Shorter with a Bachelor of Science in Management. A longtime volunteer for Ducks Unlimited, he currently serves on that organization’s state committee as State Chairman Elect. In this post, he manages and leads a large group of volunteers in fundraising efforts. As a field expert for Drake Waterfowl, he received the 2011 Conservation Champion Award. He enjoys spending time in the outdoors with his family and training his Labrador Retrievers. He and his wife, April, have been married for 15 years and have two children: Sam, 13, and Holly, 9. They are members of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Ransome will leadShorter’s alumni relations and annual giving efforts through events, mailings, phonathons, and building relationships with all of the Shorter Family. She comes to Shorter from Samford University, where she has served as Director of Annual Giving since 2006. At Samford, she also served as Annual Giving Officer from 2003 to 2006. She also worked as Campaign Director and Communications Coordinator for Wilson-Bennett, Inc., in Searcy, Ark., and as interim Assistant Director of Development at Troy State University, where she had served as aPhonathon caller and Office Manager.

Mrs. Ransome graduatedfrom Troy State University with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major inCommunication Arts. She served as chair of the Staff Advisory Council at Samford University and is active in the Alabama chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, currently serving as vice president for education of that organization. Her article, “Special Report: 10 Ways to Prime Your Annual Fund Campaign,” was published in Successful Fund Raising.

Ms. Jones assists the directors in the university advancement division in addition to providing leadership with social media and young alumni. She is a native of Huntsville, Ala. She is a 2007 graduate of Madison County High School. She transferred to Shorter in 2008 and played volleyball for the Lady Hawks until graduating in 2011 with a degree in Art with an emphasis in photography. She is building a small business in photography in her spare time and, as a young alumna, will provide great insight into engaging and involving young alumni at Shorter. Her excitement and energy through her many years of playing team sports is contagious and will be an integral part of the success of alumni relations at Shorter for many years to come.

Here's a Baptist Press article on the accreditation crisis at Brewton-Parker College, Shorter's sister school:

http://www.abpnews.com/ministry/organizations/item/7607-brewton-parker-placed-on-probation

Very worrisome. I can't believe the Georgia Baptist Convention (GBC) is just letting this happen. One of the deficiencies that SACS is citing is BPC's finances!

Will they wash their hands of Shorter, too?

Yes, the GBC gives to both schools, but only a tiny share of their budgets, and they haven't stepped it up much as both schools slide into crises.

Dr. J. Robert White: do you want all of us in Georgia to look like tightwad hicks to the rest of the Southern Baptist Convention? Dr. Nelson Price, how about you?

Please, please guys -- show some leadership and stewardship of these schools before they collapse.

Brewton-Parker College was denied reaffirmation of accreditation and placed on Probation because the Commission’s Board of Trustees determined that, at the time of the submission of a First Monitoring Report following the institution’s decennial review, it had failed to demonstrate compliance with Core Requirement 2.5 (Institutional Effectiveness), Core Requirement 2.8 (Faculty), Core Requirement 2.11.1 (Financial Resources), Comprehensive Standard 3.3.1.1 (Institutional Effectiveness: Educational Programs), Comprehensive Standard 3.5.4 (Terminal Degrees of Faculty), Comprehensive Standard 3.7.1 (Faculty Competence), Comprehensive Standard 3.10.1 (Financial Stability), Comprehensive Standard 3.10.3 (Control of Finances), and Federal Requirement 4.7 (Title IV Program Responsibilities) of the Principles of Accreditation. The cited standards expect an accredited institution to provide evidence that it (1) engages in ongoing, integrated, and institution-wide research-based planning and evaluation processes, (2) has an adequate number of full-time faculty, (3) has a sound financial base and demonstrated financial stability, (4) identifies expected outcomes of and shows improvements in the area of student learning and educational programs, ( (5) ensures a sufficient number of faculty members holding appropriate terminal degrees, (6) employs qualified faculty, (7) exercises appropriate control over all its financial resources, and (8) ensures compliance with Title IV program responsibilities.

Once again, this web site mangled my post. The first part of the post above got cut off; it gave a link to the June 28 report of the SACS college accreditation report for Shorter's sister college, Brewton-Parker College, also controlled by the Georgia Baptist Convention.

http://www.sacscoc.org/2012 June Actions and Disclosure Statements/Brewton Parker College.pdf

I encourage folks to download it and read it for themselves -- it's a page long.

The latest RN-T headline: "North Georgia school raises more than $44 million"

http://rn-t.com/view/full_story/19250246/article-North-Georgia-school-raises-more-than--44-million?instance=home_news_lead_story#cb_post_comment_19250246

That's private money donated to a small state school -- why can't Shorter do as well? Why not even better?

There are 3600 GBC churches in Georgia. Several million GBC members.

Why on earth should Shorter be in a financial crisis? Why should sister GBC college, Brewton-Parker, be on accreditation probation for (among many problems) financial instability?

Where's the stewardship? Where's the leadership?

The GBC struggled mightily to wrest control of Shorter from it previous donors and board -- are they now just going to let it twist slowly in the wind?

I have seen more than one reference on RN-T about Mayor McNiece's involvement with Shorter. I know she was listed this spring on the commencement program for Shorter.

I have always know Mrs McNiece to be a good woman who faithfully served many organizations in Rome and who has been a good mayor for the city.

An explanation is in order here. It was no typographical error that placed Mayor McNiece's name on that program. There was either an intentional deception on the part of the Shorter administration or the mayor, who represents the entire city, including many citizens adamantly opposed to what has transpired at Shorter, is, in fact, on the Shorter board of trustees.

RN-T, this is a matter of public interest. It is incumbent on you to report on the truth of this matter. Either Mayor McNiece serves on the board and endorses the so-called Lifestyle Statement or Shorter has, in an attempt to legitimize its actions, appropriated the mayor's good name to further their agenda.

Why is RN-T sweeping this under the rug?

Over 500 students and their friends and parents saw her name on the commencement program. Hundreds more have heard about it from those who were there.

It is time for some answers.

Where does Shorter publish its list of major donors each year? Most schools do this but I can't find Shorter's for this or previous years.

Suggestions?

Given the crisis at Shorter, this is great news!

I’ve been wondering when they were going to get more aggressive about their financial situation. So many of their previous donors have been so antagonized that it was clear they needed to work on finding new donors.

I still haven’t hear much about Dr. Dowless doing any fundraising — why not?

Fundraising well known to be the chief task of a university president. Berry College’s Stephen Briggs raises millions every year. Darlington School’s President, Tom Whitworth, and Joe Montgomery, Chief Advancement Officer raised $90 million over the last 5 years in a terrible recession. Then there’s Martha Berry herself — a legendary money-raiser (and she was an Episcopalian - surely Baptists can do better!)

C’mon, Donald — shake a leg!!

This list does not differ at all from the 2011 list that I copied from Shorter’s site last fall before they removed the list from their site. It still does not answer the question about Rome’s Mayor McNiece being listed on a football program as a member of the Board. This controversy seemed to lead to the list of Trustees being removed from the school’s site.

Here's the link to the list on Shorter's website:

http://www.shorter.edu/about/board_of_trustees.html

No Mayor Evie McNiece on the list.

Why would they list her in their program as a Trustee but not on their website?

Was she or wasn't she back then? Can Mayor McNiece or someone at Shorter shed some light on this?

Thanks.

Almost, that is the same link I saved back last fall. If you go to Shorter’s site, they no longer list a link to the Board. I really don’t know if someone stating that the Mayor was on the list was the catalyst or not. It could very well be that the Board members requested the removal because it was about the same time it all hit the fan about the Statements of Faith and Personal Lifestyle.

I do believe their Advancement Team has their work cut out for them.

Do each of Shorter's Trustees also sign the Personal Lifestyle Statement?

It's my understanding that the mayor is not a member of the board.
