Floyd County police said a 7-year-old girl with an eye for detail helped them nab a serial burglar.

Floyd County police have charged Marco Tulio Gutierrez-Cordon, of 400 Burnett Ferry Road, in connection with eight burglaries that have occurred in the past few weeks. He will be charged with a ninth burglary on Monday, according to Sgt. Jeff Jones of the Floyd County Police Department.

He is currently being held on eight counts of burglary, seven counts of criminal trespass and one count of theft by taking.

Gutierrez-Cordon is also a suspect in a burglary on Shoreline Drive, Jones said.

The child deserves all of the credit for Gutierrez-Cordon’s capture by giving officers a description of his vehicle, according to Jones.

“The girl told her neighbor, who was a victim, and when (Sgt. Byron) McCarley interviewed her, she provided the details,” Jones said.

The burglaries in Floyd County occurred during the day and involved breaking glass out of windows, according to the reports.

The burglaries in the county Gutierrez is currently charged with are:

  • May 22 — Hedgewood Circle. According to the report, entry was made by breaking a glass pane out of the carport door so that the deadbolt could be reached and unlocked. An iPad and several items were reported stolen.

  • June 7 — Smith Road. According to the report, entry was made by breaking a side window. Several items were taken including jewelry and a computer.

  • June 22 — Old Summerville Road. The glass was busted out on the carport door, according to the report. Items taken included jewelry and a laptop.

  • June 22 — Echles Drive. The resident returned home and found her front glass door busted. The resident told police two rings were missing.

  • June 25 — View Drive. A windowpane on the door leading to the carport was broken. Several pieces of jewelry were missing.

  • June 26 — Abrams Road. A window was busted out of the residence. Jewelry was taken from the residence.

  • June 26 — Pine Ridge Drive. A carport window was broken. Several items were taken from the home.

Gutierrez-Cordon was pawning the items he was stealing, using a different name, according to Jones.

Brunswick County, Va. has a hold on Gutierrez-Cordon.

He is also being held for Immigration Customs and Enforcement.

“The day we captured him, we were told he was planning to leave the state,” Jones said.
