Across three local sites this week, the Etowah River had an average of 8.06 colony forming units of bacteria per 100 milliliters, below the federal Environmental Protection Agency “safe level” of 95.12 cfu/100ml. The figure is based on a geometric mean, not a true average of the three sites.

At U.S. 411 in Bartow County, levels were 108.6 cfu/100ml; at the Rome bypass and Grizzard Park, levels were 113.7 cfu/100ml; and at Second Avenue in Rome levels were at 69.7 cfu/100ml.

Last week the average for all three sites was 126 cfu/100ml.
