ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed will join President Barack Obama when he signs legislation reauthorizing federal funding for key highway and transit programs through 2014.

Reed serves as chairman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Transportation and Communications Committee and was a strong advocate for the renewal of surface transportation funding at the federal level.

Reed says investments in infrastructure will create jobs and help the economy to recover.

The legislation, known as the "Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century" Act, also extended current interest rates on student loans.
