ATLANTA (AP) — A new requirement for those seeking to get or renew a Georgia driver's license is causing long lines in some places.

WSB-TV reports that some people waited more than six hours Thursday to renew their licenses in Norcross. WXIA-TV reports that some waited more than five hours at a Department of Driver Services office in Sandy Springs Tuesday.

The new requirements took effect this week. Customers applying for or renewing a driver's license must go to a Department of Driver Services customer service center in person and present their original identification documents. They have to prove their identity, Social Security number and residential address.

That requirement was already in place for people applying for their first license or ID card. The new rules extend that requirement to renewals and reinstatements.

FEMALES: What you need to know.

I went online to the DDS website and did the 'personal checklist for documents." I gathered everything it said to gather. I waited in line for 2.5 hours thinking I had all my documentation. I now have a temporary permit for 120 dyas for me to bring back more documents.

1- Your birth certificate does not match your CURRENT ID/LICENSE? AKA.. Last name... They need that marriage Certificate. Does not matter you already did this. THEY NEED TO SEE HOW YOUR NAME CHANGED FROM YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE TO THE NAME ON YOUR CURRENT ID/LICENSE!!!

2- Divorced since then?? Went back to your maiden name? Bring that CERTIFIED DIVORCE PAPER from the County Clerks Office!!

3- NEVER CHANGED YOU NAME WITH DDS during Divorces etc.... Guess what? YOU NEED A NAME CHAIN OF COMMAND FROM YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE ON EACH CHANGE OF NAME YOU HAD.. MULTIPLE MARRIAGES/DIVORCES....ID SHOWS A DIFFERENT NAME FROM BIRTH CERTIFICATE TO THE LATEST CERTIFIED DIVORCE PAPERS? Not gonna happen. I have to go back.

If you are FEMALE and ever been MARRIED OR DIVORCED.... you will need anything that reflects the name from your birth certificate to your current ID/LICENSE on any LAST NAME CHANGES.. ALL MUST BE CERTIFIED!!!

Is this a waste of time for the integrity of our SECURE IDs? And how long will this process last? I spent 3 hours there and kept hearing "I will issue you a 120 day TEMP DL (for renewals) so that you may bring back your documents needed to Secure your ID."

I know who I am!!!! The court says I am who I am!!! My current DL/LECENSE must be a hoax. because it would not have the info on it if I had not brought those papers to change it to begin with!!

WHO KEEPS THIER FLOCKING MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES FROM A DIVROCE ANYWAY BESIDES STALKERS??

Bottom line.. Multiple marrigaes and legal name changes at any point that differs from your Birth Certificate or Your Passport.... you better have the CERTIFIED paper trail.

It is like you are going in for the first time EVER to get an ID or LICENSE (minus the physical driving exam).

Men have it made for the most part.. they can have multiple marriages and not have to have these papers. Women will however depending on which names you kept per divorce. Best bet... grab all your papers from each .. for those of you with muliplte marriages.

*skips off to look for anything that remotely resembles papers relating to my ex as she holds her wallet tight so not to spend too much on the 'certified copies in the courts houses'*

Doesn't matter who's in charge, the Donkeys or Elephants...it's the same. Both have a way of making the simple complicated. Republicans harp on "less government." Doesn't look like that to me.

From the Drivers License website:

Beginning July 1, 2012, DDS will implement additional procedures that enhance the integrity and security of your Driver's License (DL) and Identification Card (ID). These new procedures will require that you bring additional documentation with you when you visit one of our Customer Service Centers (CSC). If you currently hold a valid Georgia DL or ID, you will be issued a Secure ID DL/ID at the time of your next renewal or reinstatement. Those who do not hold a valid Georgia DL or ID, you will be issued a Secure ID DL/ID at the time of your application.

These documents will include the following:

•At least one (1) document to prove your Primary Identity, and

•At least one (1) document to prove your Social Security Number, and

•At least two (2) documents to prove your Residential Address.

DDS would like to remind you that for visits to our CSCs, you must bring original or certified documents that prove your identity, social security number and residential address.

since this new license/ID will be " Secure " does that mean the next time we have to renew it that we wont have to have all these documents?

If not then there is no reason to have to have them now. If you cant renew the "secure" license/id without all the extra documents then it isnt serving it's purpose because then they would be saying that these license/id can forged.

But wait a min,,, that's common sense and we all know common sense & government cant be used in the same sentence.

This shows how stupid our government can be. I can understand requiring someone who needs to prove who they are because they have lost their license or has never had one to have all these documents, but cant they look at the picture on someone's old license and tell that it is the correct person?

To have an old license or ID card at some point in time they would have had to present these documents.

Just another example of the lack of common sense our elected officials show everyday.

As I understand it, the push for harder-to-forge licenses and for closer scrutiny of the people that get licenses comes from Homeland Security and information they had on how terrorists were planning to forge IDs. The new licenses are hard to forge -- but if they don't check people when they renew, then we could have folks using forged or altered old-style licenses to get the new licenses.

This doesn't stop every possibility, but it makes it trickier for terrorists.

It was inconvenient for me when I renewed my license but if it improves our security, I'm all for it.

The new licenses are pretty spiffy - holograms, raised signatures, colors, etc.

Criminals don't care about having a valid license so how is this going to help security? It might deter the criminals from renting a vehicle but then they'll just go steal one.

I agree crawfish... if someone is wanting to get a fraudulent license or ID then i'm sure they would be able to come up with the necessary fraudulent documents that they are requiring and then guess what... they still would have a license or ID but now it's a "Secure DL/ID. Just another example of making law abiding people jump thru hoops because of the people who dont abide by our laws.

The Georgia legislature has a long record of poorly-thought out and worded legislation that has repercussions far outside of what was intended. In this case they let themselves be stampeded into action over an almost nonexistent threat. It's happened before over many issues.
