As thunder roared and the clouds were threatening rain, members of the Rome-Floyd Fire Department were on the banks of the Etowah River rescuing two people who were caught up in the current Wednesday afternoon.

The man and woman had jumped in to swim from a small dock near the Floyd Bowling and Amusement Center on Riverbend Drive, according to Battalion Chief Phil Taylor.

The pair did not want to give their names or elaborate about their rescue but they did say they were just taking a swim.

The man repeatedly referred to himself as “Tarzan” and to his female friend as “Jane.” The woman mentioned it was her first attempt at swimming in the Etowah.

When rescue crews arrived, the two were hanging onto logs to stay afloat.

Firefighters had to walk through some heavy brush filled with briars to get to the banks.

The firefighters were able to toss the couple flotation devices and pull them to safety with a few minutes of arriving.

Floyd Medical Center emergency workers checked out the pair, who were unhurt, and police questioned them before allowing them walk away just as the wind started blowing and rain began falling heavily.

Unless you know for a fact, I don’t think you can call them crack heads. Idiots, yes, because we are all witness to their idiotic behavior in the river, but they weren’t caught on camera smoking crack, that I’m aware of :P
