The Rome Area History Museum is celebrating the Red, White and Blue on Independence Day with free admission today. Star-spangled cookies and refreshments will be served. There will be special military history displays and the “Howard Finster: An American Vision” art installment (in conjunction with Paradise Garden and the Rome Area Council for the Arts). The Model Ruritan Barbecue sale is todayfrom 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Shannon Scout Hut. Barbecue plates are $6, sandwiches $3 and Brunswick stew starts at $2 a bowl. Pints, quarts and gallons will also be sold. Soft drinks or water is $1. Homemade desserts will be sold by the Friendly River Homemaker Club for $1.50.
The annual Salute to America celebration is scheduled to take place today at Ridge Ferry Park. Gates will open at 6 p.m. A musical performance will be provided by the Eighth Regiment Band of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry from 7 to 8 p.m. Presentation of flags and colors will be at 8 p.m. followed by the Rome Symphony pops concert. Fireworks will begin around 9:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Harbin Clinic and the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority.
