Throughout her successful softball career, Lacey Herring has always been a student of the game.

On Thursday, she was more like a professor.

Working with a group of roughly 30 youth-aged players, Herring and her Berry College teammates served as instructors at the Lady Vikings’ camp.

Herring, who was a standout at Rockmart and is now a rising senior at Berry, said she felt right at home in her teaching role during the one-day event.

“I’ve been on the other end of these camps for all my life,” said Herring.

“So it was great to be able to give something back and share (with these girls) everything that I’ve learned up to this point. It was nice to be able to do this for them.”

The Berry coaching staff also provided instruction during the camp, which was attended by mostly high-school aged players.

Herring, an All-Area performer during her career at Rock-mart, said she tried to make sure the players knew that the camp wouldn’t have an “all-business” type of atmosphere.

“I was kind of the one who cut up with the players,” she said with a laugh.

“I really wanted to make them feel welcome, because I remember what it was like to be out there and be nervous.”

The campers went through various drills during the “advanced-skills” event.

Many of the players were preparing for the upcoming high school season, which starts in August.
