A Rome man who was arrested and charged for fleeing police last Tuesday is now faced with an additional felony charge of rape, according to a Floyd County Jail report.

According to the report:

Mitchell Leon Edwards, 20, of 9 Saunders Drive, allegedly “had carnal knowledge with the victim without her consent and against her will” at a residence on Wayside Road between 1 to 6 a.m. on April 30, 2011.

Edwards was initially arrested last Tuesday after police tried to pull him over for driving 80 mph in a 55 zone near Doyle Road.

As police tried to catch up with him, Mitchell increased his speed and then wrecked his car and ran away. A K9 unit located him in the woods some 300 yards from the wreck.

Edwards was charged with felony rape in addition to felony charges of driving without a license, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, speeding, failure to maintain lane, driving on the wrong side of the road, leaving the scene of a wreck, driving too fast for conditions and violating probation.
