When trying to beat the heat of summer — and attempting to have fun doing it — there are not too many things better than attending a summer camp.

And for many kids in Greater Rome, going to camp means not only having fun but also learning and practicing.

All over Greater Rome, schools are putting on camps and clinics in different sports.

At Coosa High, the Eagles have been having their youth basketball camp this week, and coach John McFather couldn’t be happier with how it has been going.

“It’s been going great and this is the best one as far as number wise that we’ve had since I’ve been at Coosa,” said McFather when reached by phone Wednesday. “We’ve got 45 campers and we have a slew of our high school kids that are helping instruct at the camp so the gym has been full.”

While the camps are enjoyable for the campers, they are also fun for the high-school aged instructors.

“It’s very good for our players to do (this) because it’s a way to reach out to our community and the younger kids in the community,” said McFather. “I think it’s an outstanding thing for our players to get to teach and help me teach. You learn more by teaching.

“It’s not only good for these young kids in the camp, but it’s very good for our players to make those connections and build those relationships. And I just want to thank the community and all the kids that came out for the camp, and the players that have helped me put on the camp.”
