Rome runners took five of the six top spots in the annual Berry Half Marathon, 5K and 10K races at Berry College.

Saturday’s race results included first-time Berry racers Damien Porter and Martin Hernandez, who took the top spots in the 5K and half marathon for men overall, respectively. Porter finished with a final time of 17:06 at a 5:03 pace. Hernandez finished out his 13.2-mile run at 1:09:36 with a 5:19 mile pace.

Both said afterward they thought Berry was a challenging course and that it was a well managed race.

Other winners Saturday included Romans Andrew Fuller for the overall men’s 10K and Jill Horst for the overall 10K women’s race. Both Fuller and Horst are experienced Berry runners, including Fuller’s win last year in the 5K race. Fuller finished with a time of 31:18, while Horst came in seven minutes later at 38:30.

Fuller said Saturday that despite a summer injury he was glad to be back out running and winning races.

“I just wanted to get one under my belt,” he said. “I’ve been racing a lot but more so on the track and I wanted to see how I would do on the road.”

The women’s overall winner in the 5K race was Berry College senior Ellery Jones, who said she ran her personal best to finish on top.

“I ran a very good PR (personal record) today,” she said. “It was my first time breaking 22. I had close to a 30 second PR so I was really happy with it.”

Justyna Mudy of Rome was also a top finisher Saturday, taking the top spot for the women’s overall half marathon with a time of 1:20:54, keeping pace at a 6:11 mile.
