Across three local sites this week, the Etowah River had an average of 42.4 colony forming units of bacteria per 100 milliliters, well below the federal Environmental Protection Agency safe level of 126 cfu/100 ml. The 42.4 figure is based on a geometric mean, not a true average of the three sites.

The Coosa River Basin Initiative is conducting weekly bacteria monitoring at three sites in Bartow and Floyd counties through September.

At U.S. 411 in Bartow County, levels were at 57.3 cfu/100 ml; at the Rome bypass and Grizzard Park levels were 25.9 cfu/100 ml. and at Second Avenue in Rome levels were 51.2 cfu/100 ml.

Last week, the average at all three sites was 38.6 cfu/ml.
