The Floyd County school system has cancelled extracurricular outdoor activities according to school spokesman Tim Hensley.

According to the Floyd County Schools:

Programs that move practices into an air conditioned facility or normally practice in an air conditioned facility will be allowed to practice or hold planned activities this afternoon.

The Rome City Schools will still hold football practices after 6 p.m. Band will be held inside and softball practices will continue - taking frequent breaks and no running.

Many of the schools have already taken precautions because of the heat - the Armuchee High School football team practices first thing in the morning often on the field at 5:15 a.m. and the Rome high team begins practices indoors only venturing outside after temperatures begin to drop.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for our area and heat index values are likely to read as high as 105 today. The actual high may reach near 99.

By noon the temperature at Richard B. Russell Regional Airport had already reached 93 degrees, according to the NWS.

There is a 20 percent chance of showers tonight and the low is forecast around 74.

The heat advisory continues into tomorrow.

Thursday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8 a.m. Partly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 105.

Thursday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 73.

Friday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 99. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 72.

I am seeing changes but these stories seem to be forgotten too soon. A winning football team

is remembered more. I not sure why though.

My child in in quiz bowl every year. It's fun but it does not get the attention football does.

I guess that is because it does not generate money for the school.

BTW my child also plays sports but academics always comes first.

Thanks acct101 for bringing this to my attention. Maybe be can do more academic competitions.

I would like to see some of the children who are labeled as 'nerds" of many schools actually become the stars of the school.

Have a good day.

Sports should not be banned but we do need to place more importance on academics. I agree with Voter that this country does not place importance on academic competition. Our schools should push to be known for the smartest kids. Our future as a nation depends on this. Math and science especially need to be emphasized.

Our schools could compete with one other in science and math. Awards could be given to the students,

teachers and schools with the highest achievers and best scores.

A school known for the best science team as opposed to the best football team will move us out of the "caveman" days and into modern society.

Here is a novel idea - ban Voter from this pointless comment board.

C'mon toughen these kids up and quit the whining. I can remember being in the heat all through August doing two-a-days and water breaks were for sissies. Of course common sense has to be used and hydration is important but for the love of God, quit babying them and let them become men!

I agree with TheSeer. Until you have been out there and seen what RHS does with their student-athletes to maintain their hydration and health, maybe you shouldn't question it. I've seen it...and it is top notch!

Better yet...visit some Friday night lights...and see which schools have kids on the sidelines in cramps from poor hydration by the second quarter. That will tell you who takes care of their kids.

Schools resuming session in early August is to blame for this mess..No problem with early classes, but athletics shouldn't start until Sept..First football game should be around sept 10th or 20th, like it was in my day..They have WAY too many teams in the playoffs and need to reduce the schedule and stop rewarding schools with losing records a playoff berth..In my day, a trip to satate meant something..And Yes, i used to walk to school and carry my lunch:)

Where is there any implication or suggestion that Rome City Schools now or in the past have put activities above the safety of students. The band was practicing inside. The softball team wasn't running. The football team, which is incredibly well conditioned already due to the players voluntarily working out all summer, was not practicing until this evening. If you don't want your child at Rome High School, don't send them there. The rest of us will trust the administration, coaches and trainers because we know that they know what they are doing.

We have great leadership on our Floyd County School Board. This is the best group of people ever. I can not say it enough.

Great leaders make great decisions.

I do not understand the Rome City Schools continuing policy to put school activities above the students safety.

We never cancelled practice for the heat, but then again we didn't spend all summer with Xbox controllers in our hands either.

The Floyd County School Board is the best. They do care for your and my children. I am very pleased with them. They protected our children during the snow "storm" and are now showing care in protecting our children from the heat.

Floyd County Schools are the best and getting better every day!

I am glad to see Floyd BOE stepping in for the safety of their students. It is a tradgedy that two young men had to die earlier this week for there to be a concern though.
