Across three local sites this week, the Etowah River had an average of 54.9 colony forming units of bacteria per 100 milliliters, well below the federal Environmental Protection Agency “safe level” of 126 cfu/100ml. The 54.9 is based on a geometric mean, not a true average of the three sites.

The Coosa River Basin Initiative is conducting weekly bacteria monitoring at three sites in Bartow and Floyd counties through September.

At U.S. 411 in Bartow County, levels were 64.5 cfu/100ml; at the Rome bypass and Grizzard Park, levels were 42.8 cfu/100ml; and at Second Avenue in Rome levels were at 60.2 cfu/100ml.

Last week the average for all three sites was 67.3 cfu/100ml.
