E Coli measurements in the Etowah River for July 20

Across three local sites this week, the Etowah River had an average of 67.3 colony forming units of bacteria per 100 milliliters, well below the federal Environmental Protection Agency “safe level” of 126 cfu/100ml. The 67.3 is based on a geometric mean, not a true average of the three sites.

The Coosa River Basin Initiative is conducting weekly bacteria monitoring at three sites in Bartow and Floyd counties through September.

At U.S. 411 in Bartow County, levels were 137.2 cfu/100ml; at the Rome bypass and Grizzard Park, levels were 55.6 cfu/100ml; and at Second Avenue in Rome levels were at 39.9 cfu/100ml.

Last week the average for all three sites was 52.87 cfu/100ml.
