The first order of business will undoubtedly be to make sure the air conditioning unit is working better than it was during the dedication ceremony Sunday afternoon. Dennis Price said that he expects to start mov-
ing from their former home on Evans Street in North Rome as soon as today.
“It’s just wonderful, unbelievable to me,” Dennis Price said. “I never thought I would actually build one from the ground and actually move into it.”
Price and his wife, Elisha Price, were there every step of the way, working alongside scores of Habitat volunteers.
“Before it was even walls, it touched our lives,” Elisha Price said.
Kay New, the Women Build chair, presented Dennis and Elisha with the keys to their new home and said, “they have only made my life better.”
The five-bedroom, two-bath home will also be home for the Price’s two daughters and four grandchildren.
The children were running from room to room, showing off their new home and hugging the many volunteers the children got to know during the almost six-month construction process.
June Aycock was the Women Build construction leader for the project.
“We usually had 20 on Saturday; some Saturday’s we had more volunteers,” Aycock said. “On Tuesdays and Thursdays we had smaller groups.”
Diane Minshew, volunteer coordinator for the project, said she was looking forward to the next Women Build in 2013.
“If you see me after this is over, I’ll sign you up for the next Women Build,” Minshew said.
The foundation was dug in February and construction actually started March 5.
Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Bruce Day said the Price home was a little larger than most of the Habitat for Humanity homes.
“They had a larger family, so we try to accommodate the family size, and we think we’ve done a good job on this one,” said Day.
Day said the typical Habitat home typically costs about $75,000 to build and generally appraises for a little more than that amount.
Representatives from the Thistle Garden Club were on hand to present landscaping tools Sunday, while leaders from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Strikers Motorcycle Club presented the family with a huge basket of house warming gifts. The Habitat Home Mart also donated a $100 gift certificate to help stock the new home.
