ATLANTA (AP)-- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says he continues to back his friend Newt Gingrich in his White House bid.

Deal, a Republican who served with Gingrich in the House, said Friday that "when the going gets rough, I don't cut and run on my friends."

On Thursday, at least 16 top campaign staff and strategist quit en masse. Gingrich has vowed to continue to run.

Deal is serving as Gingrich's Georgia campaign chairman.

Former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, who had been Gingrich's national campaign co-chairman, jumped ship and is now backing former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. His other national c-chairman, former Gov. Zell Miller, remains committed to Gingrich.

Deal said whether Gingrich stays in the race is his decision, and that he will support whatever decision the candidate makes.
