University administrators plan to turn the base into the UGA Health Sciences Campus, with classrooms and offices for the university's College of Public Health and for the UGA medical school partnership with the Georgia Health Sciences University, now housed in a renovated mill building near the main UGA campus.

UGA President Michael Adams and U.S. Department of Education official Dennis Bega held a ceremony marking the transfer on Friday, signing documents in the UGA president's mansion on Prince Avenue.

Under federal rules, the property had to be transferred from the Navy to the Department of Education before it can be turned over to the University System of Georgia.
