There are idiots, and then there are idiotic statements. Leonard Pitts is no idiot. He may have been idiotic to say the Tea Party is largely racially motivated, but he has also made some pretty trenchant observations about American society over the years. He also gets tons of racial hate mail for his columns -- this has been well documented -- so I wouldn't get too irritated about his sensitivity to these matters. He knows how racism sounds.

CapitolG: I feel I am no less "entitled" to affordable healthcare than my grandmother was entitled to Medicare, or my parents to Social Security, or you to a public education. None of these things were in the U.S. Consitution when it was drafted, but at various points in time our country divined that they were necessary and Constitutional, and today we take them for granted. The difference between what you call "entitlement" and what I feel is a civic good is a matter of legislation, acculturation by the public, and (in hindsight, assuming this thing or something like it becomes law) good sense.

Furthermore, I can't find anything in the DSM under "entitlement mentality." I hear this phrase tossed around a lot in conservative forums, but have yet to hear a good definition for it. There are things I feel entitled to, and things I don't. I could just as easily say you have a "prohibitionist mentality" or a "school of hard knocks mentality," and that would sound just as pejorative, but it would just be a pseudo-scientific way of saying I don't like you.

Mystic, I can agree that Philo used a poor choice of words, but was not too far off track. Philo used "take over." Ok, not quite so. The real plan of this bill is to suffocate the private insurers. What is the end result? The same as if insurers were taken over.

Mystic, no one is entitled to insurance. You have a entitlement mentality. You want everyone else to pay for your needs. Don't you have a job? It would be great if there were programs to help the poor with their medical woes. No one wants to see people going around with rotten teeth and ruptured spleens.

Shouldn't a political candidate consider the Appearance of Impropriety associated with accepting campaign contributions from those who have a vested interested in seeing the Northern Arc quashed when they could play a major role in the decision-making process? I'm sure Karen is a wonderful person who would never do anything untoward, just like all of our politicians are, but

If elected governor, can we expect Handel to accept campaign contributions from a death row inmate's family at a time when the governor is considering a pardon or commutation? Why not? Shouldn't we just TRUST that the financial contribution has no impact on her decisions? That's what she is asking us to do now.
