Earl Drummond was one of more than two dozen people who came out to see what kind of deal he might be able to get on an abandoned storage unit.

Drummond looked around the inside of the first unit — containing mostly furniture and mattresses, but also a truck camper shell leaning against the wall.

He and the others were given a few minutes to look inside and make gut calls on the value of the items. Once he finished his viewing, he simply said “maybe.”

Maybe he’d buy it, maybe he wouldn’t.

It turned out Drummond had the highest bid for the first unit auctioned off on Saturday, paying $350 when all was said and done. But this local version of the reality TV show “Storage Wars” didn’t benefit the unit’s owners. The money went for a good cause.

“Once a year, More Space holds a charitable auction,” said More Space Storage manager Tobie Peck. “Last year in April we had one for breast cancer awareness. This year we’re having one for the (Greater Rome) Young Marines, to help with their group.”

Peck said the owners of More Space gave her permission to auction off the units. Last year’s event raised $1,000.

Typical finds inside storage units, according to Peck, are furniture, appliances and “a whole lot of everything.”

But for the purpose of helping out the Young Marines, winners also knew they would find gift certificates hidden inside the unit for restaurants around Rome.

Peck said her reason for choosing the Young Marines — and for breast cancer awareness during the April 2012 auction — came down to simply wanting to do something to give back.

“I like giving back to the community,” she said. “And I like helping organizations.”
