NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A day after electing their first African-American president, Southern Baptists passed a resolution opposing the idea that same-sex marriage is a civil rights issue.

Thousands of delegates at the denomination's annual meeting in New Orleans on Wednesday were nearly unanimous.

It affirms Southern Baptist belief that marriage is "the exclusive union of one man and one woman" and that "all sexual behavior outside of marriage is sinful."

It acknowledges that gays and lesbians sometimes experience "unique struggles" but declares that they lack the "distinguishing features of classes entitled to special protections."

The nation's largest Protestant denomination is attempting to broaden its appeal beyond its traditional white Southern base. At the same time, leaders said they feel it is important to take a public stand on their opposition to same-sex marriage.

DBeall,

How does my response that the people posting these hatefull remarks are nutjobs differ at all from their multiple remarks in this same email chain that "gays are mentally disturbed, have screws lose, are srewed in the head with faulty mental wiring" any different? Did you criticize them for their vitriolic name calling.Of course not, because you are also a biggot like them.

And, like Crawfish Creek, you have an unhealthy obsession with all things gay. Me thinks the lady doth protest too much. You know, it runs in the family.

No one believes that anyone has the right to hurt others. Pedophilia is a crime because it harms innocent children who are not old enough to consent. By the way, 99% of pedophiles are straight. Maybe we should not invite heterosexuals to the White House or allow them to get married.

How you nut jobs relate being gay to pedophilia just illustrates that all you are is hate mongers. Gay people are consenting adults and no one is harmed. You have no interest in the the truth--only in spreading hate.

Since its not acceptable to hate black people openly anymore--even in Georgia--I guess you must have all jumped on this bandwagon. I can only imagine what small pathetic lives you live.

Well, I'm looking at you calling those who disagree with you "nutjobs" and "hatemongers." I am also seeing you accuse those with whom you disagree of hating blacks and of leading small pathetic lives. Allow me to ask you: Does that sound like a proper way to debate or are you just here to insult those who hold a different opinion? Perhaps you could replace some of the insults with points of contention.

Well said dbeall. Perhaps WWrome could replace some of the insults with points of contention, but then that would take a reasonable amount of sense which WW has already shown doesn't exist.

Hilarious that SBC was invented as a religion to justify slavery. Uncle Tom seems to have forgotten where he came from.

Leviticus 20:13 clearly states "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." Well there you have it, Homosexuality is wrong, and they must pay the ultimate price... IN THE NAME OF GOD!!!

Who else shouldn't people do?

Don't let cattle graze with other kinds of Cattle (Leviticus 19:19)

Don't have a variety of crops on the same field. (Leviticus 19:19)

Don't wear clothes made of more than one fabric (Leviticus 19:19)

Don't cut your hair nor shave. (Leviticus 19:27)

Any person who curseth his mother or father, must be killed. (Leviticus 20:9)

If a man cheats on his wife, or vise versa, both the man and the woman must die. (Leviticus 20:10).

If a man sleeps with his father's wife... both him and his father's wife is to be put to death. (Leviticus 20:11)

If a man sleeps with his wife and her mother they are all to be burnt to death. (Leviticus 20:14)

If a man has sex with a woman on her period, they are both to be "cut off from their people" (Leviticus 20:18)

People who have flat noses, or is blind or lame, cannot go to an altar of God (Leviticus 21:17-18)

Anyone who curses or blasphemes God, should be stoned to death by the community. (Leviticus 24:14-16)

Don't let cattle graze with other kinds of Cattle (Leviticus 19:19)

In Deuteronomy 22:13-21, it is made clear that a marriage between a man and a woman is only valid if the woman remained a virgin after the wedding.

Why isn't the SBC pushing for virginity tests as well?

And may I just say... wow. WOW. There are some hateful and ignorant people posting on this thread. Being gay is as much of a choice as being "red or yellow, black or white". There is absolutely nothing about being attracted to someone of the same sex that indicates that someone is "mentally disturbed."

Being gay is natural... being a bigot is a choice. Talk about being "screwed up in the head".

1. I was directly quoting from Cranky2u.

2. While perhaps using that particular quote is harsh, I certainly maintain that people who spout that kind of hate are bigots. And, it seems odd to me that bigots are somehow forgiven (or at least overlooked) for their CHOICES, while people who are homosexual are practically spat upon for being BORN THAT WAY. So, yeah... perhaps I do consider people with that amount of hate inside of them to be a bit messed up in the head. My parents and my church did not raise me to speak so ill of my fellow man... perhaps I'm just lucky that I was taught the love of Christ, not the hatred of man.

considering the Southern Baptist track record with Civil Rights I will graciously agree to disagree. And if the Southern Baptist Churches want to be involved in politics and legislature that makes the laws then let them start paying taxes. Until then they should be very carful of crossing the political lines that so many pasters do today, it could end up costing them more than they are willing to pay.

The NAACP is not a religious organization, they are in fact a civil rights organization.

I was pointing out that tax exemption for religious institutions hinges on staying out of politics, it is referred to as a seperation of church and state. When a religious institution supports one candidate over another it's violating the separation and therefore no longer eligible for a tax free exemption. Maybe you are the one who "gets lost easily"?
