Several events are planned in Rome to celebrate National Tourism Week May 10-18 and National Historic Preservation Month throughout May.

The theme for this year’s tourism celebration is “Discover Great American Traditions.”

“Hotels and meeting facilities, attractions, restaurants and transportation providers are among the local businesses greatly impacted by travel to Rome,” said Lisa Smith of the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau. “In 2007, the CVB worked with meeting planners, tournament directors, and motorcoach groups that generated over $7.1 million in revenue for Greater Rome and Floyd County. This week celebrates the people who visit here, the workforce that provides service for them and the development created as a result.”

“This Place Matters!” is the theme of the month-long history celebration, which is sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Activities will focus on heritage education, historic travel, historic home ownership and community revitalization.

Local events planned for the celebrations include:

  • Be a Tourist in Your Hometown: Learn about Rome with local historian Ann Culpepper. Two tours are planned Saturday, May 10, starting at 10:30 a.m. and noon. The tours will last a little over an hour and depart from the Visitor Center on Jackson Hill. Seating is limited and reservations can be made at the Visitor Center or by calling 706-295-5576.
  • Last Stop Gift Shop open house and sale: The Visitor Center’s gift shop will hold an open house and give free postcards to all visitors on Saturday, May 10. Refreshments will be served all week.
  • Downtown Art Walk: Painters, potters, photographers and more will sell and demonstrate their art at an event on Broad Street from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10.
  • International Museum Day: Local museums will offer free admission
  • This Place Matters!: Visit the Rome-Floyd County Library for a special exhibit during the month of May.
  • Archi-Treasure 2008 architectural treasure hunt: Participants are asked to locate and identify historic architectural features pictured on the form by naming the building, address or business located in the building where the feature is found. Forms can be picked up at the Rome-Floyd Planning Department, Visitor Center on Jackson Hill and Rome City Hall and Auditorium. Participants who return the completed form by 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, to the Rome-Floyd County Planning Department in the Carnegie Building on Broad Street will be eligible for prizes.
